My Projects

FCA's. 1) Post in your blog under my projects a copy of your juice recipe. 2) For each vegetable and/or fruit write about what it is traditionally used for in regards to your health and what each ingredient is a good source of for vitamins, minerals, etc. 3) Present your recipe to the class as well as make your juice for the class to share. 4) copy everyone’s juicing project and paste it in your “shared projects area in your blog.

Strawberries are traditionally used for acne, constipation, fluid retention, gout, weight loss, and used to help your kidneys function right.
They are a good source of calcium, iron, phosporus, potassium, and vitamin C.
If you have a sugar related illness or problem then you need to be careful. As great as strawberries are, they are extremely high in natural fruit sugars. When you compare the sugar (energy) content of strawberries to some others then you will see a really big difference. Juice the strawberries on a low setting.

Apples are traditionally used for a huge variety of things...arthritis, bowel stimulator, calming of the digestive system, cleanse the intestines of toxins, digestive stimulant, fingernails, gout, hair, indigestion, kidneys, liver rheumatism, skin and weight loss.

You should take the seeds out of the apples when you juice them because the seeds have some cyanide in them, which can hurt you.

Oranges are originally used for anemia, blood constipation, gout, indigestion, liver, lungs, scurvy, skin problems, strengthening blood cells, and weight loss.

Citrus fruits, when taken in excess, are known to make calcium leave your body rapidly. All citrus fruits add citric acid to the body and so it's good to get some exercise after having a citrus fruit drink.

You should always remove the rind of grapefruits, oranges and tangerines.

The rind of oranges, grapefruits and tangerines must be removed as the rind is difficult for the human body to digest. The rind can cause rectal problems.

6 strawberries, fresh or thawed from frozen
1 apple, cored and sliced
1/2 orange, peeled and sectioned

What's in the milk group?
There are many different foods and drinks that come from milk and they are all considered to be in that food group. A lot of foods however, that are made from milk, lose most of their calcium, and results in having little or none at all. Most often than not, people buy milk, cheese butter, and yogurt. The healthier choice is to get all fat free, or low fat. You can get light ice cream, in a lot of flavors.

How much is needed?
Like many things, it depends on how much you weigh, how old you are, and who you are. For example, here is a chart that I pulled off of the internet.

Your FCA’s for this project will be: 1) describe what this vegetable is traditionally used for, 2) good source for, 3) freshness test,4) important information, 5) general information, and what the 3 greatest amounts of vitamins are in that vegetable.

Apples are traditionally used to make apple cider with. The apples that have fallen onto the ground from the trees are normally picked up, and press the juices out so that they run it through machinery. People also use apples for apple pie, apple cobbler...there are many apple-y things.

Apples are good source of pectin, a fiber that can lower blood cholesterol and sugar levels. Fresh apples are also good sources of the vitamin C — protects your body's cells from damage. Vitamin C also helps form the connective tissue collagen, keeps your capillaries and blood vessels healthy, and aids in absorbing iron and folate.

Some people say that you can eat the whole apple, however that is untrue. The seeds inside of the apple contain cyanide, [poison], and in large amounts could hurt of maybe kill you.

Apples should be firm and not bruised. They should be strong and healthy. Apples are free of fat, sodium, and cholesterol. They contain a lot of Vitamin C, that helps in the prevention of cancer.

Broccoli is extremely useful for medicinal purposes. It helps reduce the speed of cancerous cells that can go anywhere in your body. Broccoli helps repair sun damaged skin, so that it will be as healthy as it could get. The nutrition that helps is called Asphalia.

Broccoli is the only vegetable that is less nutritious if it is frozen rather than fresh. You always look at the color of it, of the green ness, and of the leaves on it.

Broccoli is a good source of calcium, potassium, folate and fiber.
Broccoli has a lot of Vitamin A and Vitamin, which both protect your body's cells from damage.

BASIL
Basil is traditionally used for herbs in soups and stews. French cooks really like it,and have traditionally used its leaves in soups and salads. Most of the varieties of basil from Asia have a stronger taste than the the European varieties.

Basil is a good source of Vitamin K and a very good source of iron, calcium and vitamin A. Its also a good source of dietary fiber. If you buy basil from a store, it normally comes in plastic so that it keeps it fresher on the shelves.

It also helps keep healthy cholestoral levels for you bodys cells.



Basil is a very common ingredient in Thai, Vietnamese and chinese cooking.

My Pyramid Plan

Eat these amounts from each food group daily. This plan is a 2200 calorie food pattern. It is based on average needs for someone like you. (A 16 year old female, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 127 pounds, physically active 30 to 60 minutes a day.) Your food needs also depend on your rate of growth and other factors. See a health care provider who can track your height and weight over time to identify your specific needs.

Aim for at least 3.5 ounces of whole grains a day

Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine)

Write a complete type 3 paper and include the following FCA’s: 1) overview, benefits, natural sources, how to use, cautions, deficiencies, overdose, side effects, interactions. 2) Look up words that you do not know. You will be presenting your project to the class.3) correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Thiamine is a very important vitamin because it helps you metabolize your fat, however, it is water soluble, which means that it disintegrates in water. After it is in the body, the water in your body makes it disappear in some parts, but not completely because the nutrients in Thiamine store the vitamin in your muscle tissues. It helps keep your heart healthy along with your digestive system and your nervous system. However, its not able to be stored in the body, minus your muscle tissues, so you have to take in the vitamin frequently to remain healthy.

The vitamin, Thiamine can be found in bananas, pork, spinach, breads, yeast, and many more.

If you have a Thiamine deficiency meaning that you cant take in and keep Thiamine, or that you just don't eat the proper foods for it, it results in having no nutrition. Or, if you are an alcoholic, the alcohol takes away the nutrition that some of your foods, and can lead to death or wasting.

What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a healthy lifestyle?

Juicing is a way to lose weight. It is said to be better than the water way, where you just drink a lot of water. Juicing is also extremely cleansing and healthy for your body because all of the juices in a juice that you make are always natural and really good for you. There are no chemicals in fruit, as there are in some meats that come off farms, or anything. Juicing is extremely good for you and if you use it correctly, then you can lose some of your weight. But dont count on juicing directly to make you lose all of your weight. You have to excercise, and keep your physical health in really good condition. If you excercise with other people, then you get the chance to socialize and that is extremely healthy since people need to interact with others to be good. If you are healthy, then you are mentally healthy as well. Your brain is an important part of your body and juicing really helps you be healthy. Your emotional and spiritual well being is also affected by how you treat your body. If you beat on your body all the time and dont give it a break, then you probably wont be that healthy.

Testicular cancer only occurs in men, because their testostorone level is much higher than a womens. Women can not get testicular cancer, and in men its rare. The scientists have yet to discover what exactly causes testicular cancer, whether its only genetic, or if it has to do with other things that men do on a regular basis, or trauma.
It is only really seen in white caucasion males from ages 25 to 45. Babies who are born with their testicals not dropped yet have a much higher chance of getting testicular cancer when they are older. Some certain virus's can make you more prone if you get them as a baby to get testicular cancer. There are two types of testicular cancer, seminomas, which are mostly seen in younger males, and teratomas, found in older men. You don't normally die from testicular cancer, because its one of the easiest forms to cure. You are treated via radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

There are many many ways to use effective birth control. Women can be put onto a monthly plan, using the pill, which is 92-99% effective. You can get progestin only pills, 92-99% effective. The patch, 92-99% effective. The ring, aka nuvaring, is 92-99% effective. There is an IUD which is 98-99% effective, and is inserted by a doctor, and is there to stay or up to 5 years. Threre is Emergency Contraceptive which is 75-89% effective, and can be used if the condom broke up to five days after intercourse and still be effective. Male Condoms are 85-98% effective while female condoms are 79-95% effective. The diaphram is 80-94% effective can last several years costs little may protect against infections. You can get an implant (Implanon) and the efficiency rate, is greater than 99%. That is intense. The last option for birth control is The Shot Deprovara, which is 97% effective, each shot lasting up to 12 weeks.

Talking about birth control with your parents and your partner can be nerve wracking and may start fights. You have to take it easy with both. Talking about it with your partner may sometimes be a little easier than with your parents, because face it, to them your still little. They cant grasp the fact that you may need to be put on birth control. Partners sometimes understand better because them, like you, do not want to have to worry about having another mouth to feed when they are still in high school.

I think that any age a girl is going to start having sex, especially when they walk around town in clothes that barely cover them. Face it, girls and boys are losing their virginity earlier and earlier. To prevent babies from coming into the world with a thirteen year old mother, I think that if a girl is sexually active, birth control should be available to them. Im not saying that 13 is acceptable at all, but there are many girls out there who are 13 and lost it early.



STI Assignment

FCA’s for this assignment is to include the following for each of the STI’s: 1) What is it? 2) How do you get it? 3) What are the symptoms? 4) How can you know for sure? 5)How is it treated? 6) What can happen if you don’t take care of it?

The first STI is Pubic Lice "crabs".
Crabs is a parasite that lives in and around your genitals. You get it by sexual contact or simply sharing the bed or clothes with someone effected with it. You will have severe itching, see lice/eggs in the pubes, small dots of blood in underwear. You can know for sure if you get a visual exam of the area. Crabs is treated by using special shampoo/lotion, wash all bedding/clothes, have others checked. If you don't take care of it, they may lead to a bacteria infection, may spread to other people, and the symptoms may get worse.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is an infection cause by bacteria, and you get it by sexual contact vagianl anal or oral, with someone who has chlamydia. Women don't tend to have symptoms, but can have pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, bleeding after intercourse. Men may have no symptoms, painful peeing, discharge from the penis. You can know for sure by a urine sample, or discharge sample sent to a lab. It is treated by antibiotics. If you don't take care of it, you can get sever infections of reproductive organs, infertility, can pass from mom to baby in childbirth, can spread infection to other sex partners.

Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is an infection caused by bacteria, and you can get it by sexual contact with someone who has gonorrhea. Womens symptoms are the same as chlamydia including blood/pus from anus and sore throat. Men have the same as women. It is treated with antibiotics, and if you dont take care of it properly, it can cause PID or infertility. It can pass from mom to baby in birth, heart trouble skin issues and or arthritis. It can also spread to other sex partners.

Syphilis
Syphilis is an infection caused by bacteria and is treated with antibiotics, and possible hospitalization. The symptoms are painless sores on mouth, penis, vagina anus or elsewhere. You know for sure if you get a medical exam of the sores, and a blood test. If you dont take care of it, you get new sores rash fever hair loss body aches sore throat swollen glands.
At a stage three it does damage to the heart and brain, can cause PID, sever damage to fetus, or death. And can cause death in the person.

HIV/AIDS
Virus that damages the bodys immune system. You get it by sexual contact with someone who has it, via body fluids. The symptoms are unexplained fever, chills, drenching, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, constant diarrhea, dry cough shortness of breath, constant fatigue, unexplained swollen glands, pink purple flat or raised blotches on or under skin, and persistent white spots in the mouth. You know for sure by a blood test or a sure test. It is treated by a mixture of medicines to try to fight the spread of infection and any illnesses.
If you dont take care of it, you develop a life threatening illness, mother can pass to child, and spread to sex/needle sharing partners.

Genital Herpes
Its an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, and once infected with it, it stays in the body. Medication or cream may speed up healing of sores, or it may prevent future outbreaks. You get it by sexual contact, skin to skin contact, with someone who has it. Virus can be passed even if no sores are present. You get painful blisters that break into open sores, and they dry up and disappear within 5-21 days, and swollen glands. You know for sure if you get medical exams of the blisters, or blood test. If you dont take care of it, the sores will come and go normally with stress and/or illnesses. Can spread virus to sex partners even when sores not present, mother can pass to child in birth, and serious death or illness of child.

Genital Warts
Its an infection caused by Human Papilloma Virus, and once infected the virus stays in body; no known cure warts may be burned off frozen cut or removed with minor surgery. You get it by sexual or skin to skin contact with someone who has HPV. The virus can be passed without the warts visible. The symptoms include small painless cauliflower like bump that grows in and around the genital area. You might have a slight itching or irritation. You know for sure by a medical exam of the bumps, or a PAP test in women. If you dont take care of it, the warts grow larger, become harder to remove, or spread to new areas. HPV is leading cause of cervical cancer in women. It can be passed from mother to child in birth, and can spread the virus to other sex partners.





Tobacco

FACTS
Smokeless tobacco is known as oral, snuff, chewing, snuff and spit tobacco. There are carcinogens, (cancer causing), and causes cancer in the mouth, and in the pancreas, with many other health problems. You can get gum disease, destruction of bone sockets around the teeth, and tooth loss, sometimes if you use it enough, you get bad breath, and your teeth get stained yellow. Snuff (dip, pinch) and is put between the gum and the cheek. If you have dry snuff, you can sniff or inhale it up your nose. Chewing loos leaves, plugs or twists, get absorbed into the saliva, and you get the nicotine that way.

RISKS
There are multiple risks to smokeless tobacco. You can get oral cancer, pancreatic caner (which attacks your pancreas), addiction to nicotine, leukoplakia (white cancerous sores in the mouth), bone loss, and gum recession (peeling back of gums).

WHO USES IT?
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that adults, 18 and up, percentage of men who use it is 6%, and the percentage of women who use it is 1%. There are recent surveys though that 14% of high school boys and 2% of high school girls use chewing tobacco. The survey said that 2.9% of middle school students had used it within the past two days of taking that survey. There are many major league baseball players that use smokeless tobacco. Smokers who use smokeless tobacco instead of cigarettes still have a chance of getting lung cancer because the nicotine and tobacco still effect your lungs.

Vitamin E is very beneficial to the body. Vitamin E has makes it so you have a healthy circulatory system. It helps prevent bloot clotting and decreases the wound healing process. Vitamin E also "decreases symptoms of premenstrual syndrom and certain types of breast disease". There have been studies that state, taking large amounts of vitamin E decreases the risk of atherosclerosis. Vitamin E is categorized in the fat tissues of our bodies. This can last from a few days to six months. This can be bad at times though, because if you get too much of it, it will get go to your liver and can cause serious health problems. Some Sources of Vitamin E are:

You cant really overdose on a vitamin but too much of Vitamin E can casue nausea and digestive problems.

- Vitamin B3, or Niacin, is a vitamin that is like other B vitamins it creates enzymes that are a key to changing food into energy, combining hormones, repair genetic material, and keeps the nervous system functioning. Vitamin C is perhaps one of the most well-known vitamins in our diets. When you visit the super market you will find many products with "a full serving of vitamin C". People use Vitamin C tablets.
Vitamin C is required for a healthy immune system, and can help prevent cancer, colds, cataracts, heart disease and aid in the healing of wounds. Vitamin C is also required in the synthesis of collagen in connective tissues.
The ascorbic acid in Vitamin C is needed for healthy cell development, healthy gum tissues and is excellent for clearing up infection and preventing cholesterol problems.
So Vitamin C is a useful and much need nutrient. What happens if the body is Vitamin C deficient?
When devoid of Vitamin C, the gums will bleed, the body is weaker and bruises more easily. You can develop scurvy, the scourge of malnourished sailors. However Scurvy is easily treated with does of Vitamin C.
The best dosages tend to be 60 mg per day or 200-300 mg in recent studies. While for pregnant and nursing women it is 75-95 mg.
You can however overdose on this vitamin. The symptoms include gastrointestinal complaints, such a diarrhea.
Now, if you do not wish to get your vitamin C, in pill form, there are many foods which contain it. Most if not all fruit contain Vitamin C while leafy green vegetables (such as Spinach) contain it as well. When taking the vitamin in pill form do not mix it with aspirin as it could cause stomach pain. Antidepressants and birth control pills can also react with it. Collard greens are a vegetable much like spinach or beet greens. They are traditionally used for things like, asthma, scurvy, cancer, capillary, strength and cataracts. they are great source for magnesium, vitamin A and C. When you buy collard greens you want to make sure that it is fresh and to do that you need to look for slightly smaller leaves then then others. Try not to buy Collard Greens which are yellow or withered. This project is on the health benefits of cabbage. Even though cabbage is a delicious and healthful staple in other countries, it is almost foreign to Americans. My Fruit is the lemon. It is tradtionly used for anemia, arthritis, blood, constipation, gout, indigestion, scurvy, skin problems, toxin elimination, and weight loss. A lemon can be a good source of bioflavanoids, vitamin C and potassium. When telling if a lemon is freash it should not have any green on it because that means that has a high acid content. You want a lemon that has a smooth skin, that means that it will have more juice in it. It is important that you know citrus fruits can take calcium from the body if you have too much of them. All of the citrus fruits give citric acid to the body and so it is good to exercise after having a citrus fruit or drink. It is always a good idea to leave the white membrain on the lemon when juicing because ut produces bioflavanoids that helps the body absorb and use vitamin C. The best fruit to use the lemon with is the apple. The three biggest vitamin in the lemon it vitamin C, A and B.

Apples are a tradition fruite especially used in pies. However they have many benifical effects for our health such as; arthritis, gout, cleansing toxins in our body and are good for weight loss. When looking to buy canberries, look for cranberries that are firm with a rich and deep color. Important information that you need to know is that canberries are very acidic, which if you drink canberry juice your urine with become more acidic and if you have a urinary tract promblem you should ask you doctor beofre drinking it. More information to know is that when drinking a citrus kind of fruit you should exercise, since limes add more acid into the body. Cantalope is a good way to solve the fallowing problems Constapation, kidney problems skin disorders, digestive tonic and bladder problems to see if your melon is fresh you put your finger where the vine was attached and push in slightly and then remove your finger the cantalope should stay round. Iy is vary important that you dont mix with the melon wheil jucing melons taste better when drunk alone. a lot of the melons nutriants come from its rind so you want to juce the rined also.

We watched a movie based on teen safety, that most of us had seen many times before. The man named Plitcher goes around to schools to talk about what teens go through everyday with parents not understanding, peer pressure, relationship pressure. The movie was set in like the 70's. Plitcher believed in vision initiative perspective, and called it VIP teens. He went into depth about each thing and why he thinks that it should go along with teens.

Today Charlene presented qiutting smokeless tobacco. She didn't get to finish it because she had to leave. James presented nicotine withdrawl and what happens to your body. Josh presented why you should quit smoking or smokeless tobacco. What are the benefits to your body to quit tobacco use.

Today we discussed missing work and who needs to stay after. You went onto the computer and showed us websites and we went over again testicular cancer.

Today Ricky came in again and talked to us about using birth control, and what methods would be good for birth control. You can use pills, patches, injections, and condoms, having all the same efficiency rate. There are also diaphrams, which are 94% effective. While condoms are 99% effective.

Ricky came and talked to us about STI's and preventing them. You need to always use some sort of prevention to protect against the infections because once you have them, they are hard to get rid of.

Today, we had a guest speaker. His name was Jim Carter. He came in to talk to us about organ and tissue donating.
He told us lots of important facts about donating. And facts in general about your organs.
You can live with only 30% of ONE kidney working good. No one really knows for sure who has 2 kidneys unless you have been ultra-sounded for anything. You can see if you have one or two when your looking at it. You can only have one, and be completely functioning. However if both of your kidneys or your only kidney doesn't work, then you need to be put onto a machine called a dialysis. You lay down on a bed, and a tube goes into one arm, and comes out the other one. It circulates all of the fluids in your body. You need it to live, and you need to go to it monday, wednesday and friday. So every three days. It takes four hours, and also costs 75, 000 dollars a year to have it.

He gave us time frames that organs can be without a host, being transported to someone else...
heart- 6 hours
liver- 4 hours
kidneys- 72 hours
cornea- 14 days.
When you get your organs transferred, you need to take these pills called immune suppressant pills so that your body doesnt try to fight and kill your new organ.

Alcoholism effects your liver most importantly because constant drinking makes your liver break apart. However if you stop drinking soon enough, your liver can repair itself with the medication that your doctor would give you. But if you continue to drink, your liver can go to stage 3 cirrosis. If you are stage 3 cirrosis, that means that you are pretty close to death. The liver is the largest organ inside of your body.
If you're braindead, your body can not continue to function without a machine to make it breathe and make the blood circulate.
The guest speaker told us about his daughter, and it was such a sad story. She died because her seatbelt wouldn't function correctly, and she was only driving a little ways down the road, when they went head on with another car. It was a really sad story.

In 1968-US gov't made a law so that all cars MUST have seatbelts
In 2001-the law "click it or ticket" was enforced.

Today we played on the computer again. Micah presented for the whole block as you had him go and look up things on the internet to find out what they meant. That was the class. Then you had Micah go to my blog and had me read Vitamin B-1 again.

Tonight i went and posted all of my work that I havent had time to post, but did tonight.

Today in class, we took a health risk survey. The survey was educational, in showing mine that some of the things that I do in a daily basis are not healthy for my body. I think that some people learned something from that survey including me in some of the things that I should do.

We also watched two videos, and took notes on Juicers.
One juicer was called the Breville Fountain Elite Juicer. That jucier was stainless steel, its durable. It also has a titanium cutting disc, and makes 8 ounces of juice in 5 seconds. There are only a few parts that you need to take apart to clean, and easy to reassemble.

Another juicer was the Jack Lalanne. The commercial for this one wasnt that professional. It has a high out put motor 30% more juice than store bnought juice, and the pulp is taken out dry. There are more vitamins and minerals, and a supersize pulp catcher.

What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a healthy lifestyle?

Juicing is a way to lose weight. It is said to be better than the water way, where you just drink a lot of water. Juicing is also extremely cleansing and healthy for your body because all of the juices in a juice that you make are always natural and really good for you. There are no chemicals in fruit, as there are in some meats that come off farms, or anything. Juicing is extremely good for you and if you use it correctly, then you can lose some of your weight. But dont count on juicing directly to make you lose all of your weight. You have to excercise, and keep your physical health in really good condition. If you excercise with other people, then you get the chance to socialize and that is extremely healthy since people need to interact with others to be good. If you are healthy, then you are mentally healthy as well. Your brain is an important part of your body and juicing really helps you be healthy. Your emotional and spiritual well being is also affected by how you treat your body. If you beat on your body all the time and dont give it a break, then you probably wont be that healthy.

Five Major Components of Health
Today we went outside and thought of things, that just randomly happened as we stepped out into the bright day. The categories were Physical, Social, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual. I found a lot for Physical Health. For example, the sun can make your skin healthy, but it can also give you skin cancer. There was litter everywhere. A person getting a bee sting if they are allergic, and needing an epi-pen. People are excersising up at the sports field. There was a path for the emergency vehicles to make their way up to the fields.
Social Health is working on a team, and talking and interacting with other people, getting comfortable to talk to others.
Mental Health is forcing your self to make time. Stress can effect a lot of your mental health, and can be damaging, but sometimes for sports be good for you.
Emotional Health should always be positive. Stress can normally make you in unhealthy situation with yourself.
Spiritual Health should make you happy.

Today we had to make our accounts for the wiki site from the school. That makes it so that I can go back and check on my account, check on assignments from mr cohun. I had to change my password from my username to something else. I had to go to blogger.com/start and create account. I had to make a 5 sections reflective writes, my projects, shared projects from peers, homework, and type 1 and 2 writes. I made two links on my blog. . .One to the class blog and one to the school website wnesu.org.

Then I had to post this blog to show that I know how to use the blogger.

Going to the class blog is really easy because its right there on the blog so its easy to check assignments.
